MISSIVE SEVENTY
With Christmas approaching, I suppose bank executives are rubbing hands at the prospect of their forthcoming bonus’; their reward for continued success in helping to bankrupt our economy.
Alongside this, we know the Government is considering how best to deal Sir John Vickers’ report which concerns that very same ‘money lending industry’; the dilemma arising from his Inquiry’s Reform proposals being; might the banks truly relocate to other cities if we clip their wings and tell them they’re worth less per capita, than most ordinary folks doing most ordinary, but worthy, jobs.
Personally, I suspect the vast majority of us would be happy to ‘call their bluff’ and let them move out – which they won’t: because to borrow from a chum of mine’s excellent mind;
it’s usually ‘better business’ to be at the top of the 2nd Division in the Football League (Championship); than to flounder in the lower / middle sections of the ‘1st’ (Premiership).
In other words, we should treat the different nations of our planet in terms of a competitive league – football’s a good model; and therefore recognise that no one ‘team’ ; company or nation can expect to be at the ‘top’ of the pile all of the time.’
It was once the Roman Empire who were there; indeed it was also Colonial and Industrial Great Britain for a while; and soon it will be China, Asia and so forth. One day it may even be Iran! So it’s my proposal that we let the bankers ‘move out’ if they wish – their wives won’t like it; and we’ll just take stock and re – invent ourselves. Quite exciting really!
SALCOMBE TODAY
A director from our Management Company visited the Town Council’s Open Forum on Wednesday 14th; to make known our concern regarding the mixed development proposed at Batson Cross (Application No. 41/3019/11/0).
This new scenario joins the predictable and disappointing trend of yet another ‘lump of land’ being treated as an isolated speculation, instead of being part of a bigger picture, which has a town based strategy behind it.
And so with Batson Cross; we have another green field site being brought into the development process, and I’m afraid it’s not a good project. However, worse to report is the fact the Town Council is considering a different future for the adjoining Park & Ride land, and the cemetery; about which I’m loss to understand why the three land ownerships cannot be viewed as a strategic opportunity in whole or part; alongside the adjacent Ember Close ‘affordable housing’ project and the ‘gross’ private estate for ‘bonused out bankers’ further down Bonfire Hill?
